We had the honor to host
Dr. Helena Vieira, from NOVA FCT, who was talking about
‘Building bridges in Stroke: from cellular research to the development of new diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies’.
Short Bio
Dr. Helena Vieira is an Assistant Professor at the NOVA School of Science and Technology and Group Leader of the Molecular Mechanisms of Disease lab at UCIBIO since 2019. She holds a Chemical Engineering degree from Instituto Superior Técnico (1997) and completed her PhD in Cell Death and Oncobiology at CNRS, France (2002), under Guido Kroemer.
Dr. Vieira has a multidisciplinary research background, having conducted postdoctoral studies in Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Neurobiology. Her research focuses on apoptosis modulation in the central nervous system, with significant contributions to the understanding of carbon monoxide (CO)-induced neuroprotection.
Her team is internationally recognized within the CO scientific community, with work exploring CO’s effects on cell death, mitochondrial function, ROS signaling, and neuroinflammation. The lab also collaborates with the Neurology Service of Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental, advancing stroke diagnostics and therapies through innovative approaches like SERS-based technology.
For more information, visit her lab’s page here, or check her profiles on ORCID, Scopus, and Google Scholar.
