November 5
We had the honor to host
Dr. Sandra Tenreiro, from NMS, who was talking about
‘Modeling eye diseases: retinal organoids as a platform for studying degeneration and neuroinflammation’.
Short Bio
I have been the leader of the Degeneration and Ageing research group at NMS|FCM-UNL since April 2022. I have BSc in Biochemistry (FCTUC), a MSc in Cell Biology (FCTUC) and a PhD in Biotechnology (IST). With a versatile nature and a broad scientific scope, my journey in science has led me to traverse various research fields and engage in multidisciplinary projects. Presently, my focus lies on unravelling the molecular mechanisms underlying age-related diseases of the retina, using retinal organoids. I am particularly motivated to explore alternative models to traditional animal research methods. My group is developing new disease models, such as an early diabetic retinopathy retinal organoid model to address our research questions and facilitate drug discovery. I collaborate closely with ophthalmologists in clinical studies on intermediate age-related macular degeneration (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06355830). Also, we are developing innovative imaging analysis tools for the identification of progression imaging markers in AMD. Globally, in my scientific career, I achieved one pending patent and 59 peer-reviewed publications (H-INDEX of 32, according to Scopus).
