The agreement covers joint research, advanced training and technological innovation, building on scientific links that NIMSB research groups at the Botton-Champalimaud Centre have helped to shape. On 28 July 2026, NOVA University Lisbon and the Champalimaud Foundation signed a five-year strategic partnership agreement that will strengthen collaboration in scientific research, advanced training and technological innovation in the fields of health and life sciences. The agreement formalises the long-standing relationship between the two institutions and creates new conditions to accelerate the development of innovative solutions for healthcare.

It establishes a framework for joint research and development projects, collaborative applications to national and international funding programmes, researcher and academic staff exchanges, co-supervision of PhD students and joint scientific publications. It also promotes the sharing of scientific infrastructure and equipment, the organisation of conferences, seminars and science outreach initiatives, as well as specialised training programmes and professional internships.

The NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB) is proud to have contributed to strengthening the ties between the two institutions through its research groups based at the Botton-Champalimaud Centre, by fostering daily scientific interactions, collaborative research and shared research environments.

“This partnership brings together two institutions with converging missions and a shared goal: to put science at the service of people’s health,” said Leonor Beleza, President of the Champalimaud Foundation. Paulo Pereira, Rector of NOVA University Lisbon, noted that the collaboration “strengthens this ambition in emerging and high-impact areas such as health, precision medicine and systems biology”, reaffirming “the University’s strong commitment to building bridges between science and society”.

For NIMSB, the agreement reinforces the Institute’s mission of interdisciplinary and collaborative research to address major biomedical challenges. Bringing together the complementary expertise and resources of NOVA University Lisbon and the Champalimaud Foundation opens new opportunities to advance research in systems biology, precision medicine and translational health, and strengthens Portugal’s standing as an international centre of scientific excellence.
