Yesterday, 4th of November, NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB) officially celebrated its 1st anniversary at the Rectorate of the NOVA University Lisbon. The anniversary was marked by the speech of Prof. Isabel Rocha, the vice-rector for Research and Innovation of NOVA University, as well as Prof. António Jacinto, the Scientific Director of NIMSB.
NIMSB is in the formative phase of establishing itself as a Centre of Excellence in medical systems biology. The institute is building the groundwork for advancing innovative, next-generation systems biology techniques, aiming to revolutionize early diagnostic metods, and precise treatment solutions.
“NOVA University stands as Portugal’s leading institution, attracting more competitive international project funding per capita than any other university,” stated Prof. Isabel Rocha and added: “With the establishment of NIMSB as a multidisciplinary center, we anticipate that NOVA will further elevate its standing in the field of precision medicine.”
Professor António Jacinto expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in NIMSB’s foundational phase, saying: “We are deeply thankful to the Rectorate team for their warm welcome, providing us not only with space but also with invaluable support. I also want to recognize the NIMSB administrative team for laying a solid foundation that will enable NIMSB to become a true center of excellence.”
Prof. Jacinto went on to say, “In the coming months, we will welcome our first research groups and move into our new facilities, allowing NIMSB to expand into a research institute.”
Looking ahead, NIMSB plans to collaborate with NOVA’s institutes, academic departments, associated hospitals, and key figures across academia, industry, government, and civil society. This engagement will foster a thriving ecosystem that supports education and training programs designed to equip emerging researchers and healthcare professionals with the skills required for Precision Medicine.
Although still in the early stages, NIMSB is on a promising path to become an influential entity in medical systems biology and Precision Medicine, with aspirations to make an impact in Portugal and globally.
