The USP/NOVA Week on Joint Cooperation, focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), Health, and Precision Medicine, is taking place from 3rd to 7th June 2024 in São Paulo and Ribeirão Preto, in Brazil, bringing together leading experts and researchers from both institutions.
In a significant step towards strengthening international academic collaboration, the University of São Paulo (USP) and the NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA) are set to convene for their second annual summit. This year’s event, focusing on AI, Health, and Precision Medicine, is being held from 3rd to 7th June 2024 in São Paulo and Ribeirão Preto, marking a pivotal occasion in the context of USP’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
One of the notable highlights of this year’s summit is the participation of the NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB). As a leading entity in medical research and systems biology, NIMSB’s involvement underscores the critical importance of precision medicine and AI in contemporary healthcare and scientific research. The institute’s delegation, including interim directors António Jacinto and Sofia Miguel, will play a key role in discussions aimed at fostering innovative collaborations and groundbreaking research projects.
The summit will feature keynote presentations and panel discussions, providing a platform for experts from both universities to share insights and explore future avenues for joint research in areas relevant to the strategic agenda of NIMSB, namely, molecular profiling using multi-omics approaches, human micro-physiological systems, and data science/artificial intelligence applied to biomedicine. Among the distinguished speakers are Professor João Conde and Professor Isabel Fernandes from NOVA Medical School (NMS), who will present on “The Landscape of Precision Medicine and Oncology at Nova Medical Research.” The event will also include Professor Isabel Rocha, Vice-Rector for Research & Innovation of NOVA, João Amaro de Matos, Vice-Rector for International Development, and prominent figures from USP, such as Professor André Carlos Ponce de Leon Ferreira de Carvalho and Professor Roger Chammas.
There will be also room for different visits, in which the Center for Research in Inflammatory Diseases (CRID) and the Cart-Cell Hemocenter are of great importance for NIMSB.
The event’s agenda includes thematic working groups, where specialists will delve into specific topics related to AI and precision medicine. These sessions are designed to facilitate detailed discussions and the formulation of collaborative projects, further cementing the ties between the two institutions.
As part of the broader strategic collaboration agreement between USP and NOVA, this annual summit alternates between Lisbon and São Paulo. The inaugural meeting in Lisbon focused on sustainability and coincided with NOVA’s 50th anniversary. This year’s focus on AI and precision medicine aligns with the evolving priorities in global healthcare, reflecting the universities’ commitment to addressing contemporary scientific and medical challenges.
